Working in the Netherlands

Working in the Netherlands

Do you live in a foreign country with an ambition to work in the Netherlands?

In this blog we will tell you everything you need to know about working in the Netherlands! The first question you need to ask yourself is; am I an EU-citizen or an Non EU-citizen? Because those are two different situations.

What do you need to work in the Netherlands

If you are a citizen of the EU, EEA or Switzerland, then only your passport or ID card of your country is necessary evidence to work in the Netherlands. When you stay longer than four months in the Netherlands, a ‘Citizen Service Number' is required, because your employer needs this for you tax registration. As well, this service number is important in case you need to see a practitioner, hospital or pharmacist for example. Do you have relatives that are citizens of EU, EEA or Switzerland and you aren’t an EU-citizen, then you need to apply to the IND to gain a residence document. (Immigration and Naturalization Service, 2022)

As a Non EU-citizen you will need a residence permit and sometimes a work permit as well to live and work in the Netherlands. It totally depends on your current situation which permit or permits you might need. (Werk.nl, 2022)

A permanent residence in the Netherlands means staying rightfully and continuously for five years or longer. After five years you’re allowed to apply for a ‘Permanent residence for nationals of the Union’. A successful apply means that you are an EU-citizen. (Immigration and Naturalization Service, 2022)
